Since Kate’s car was in the garage, Bessie dropped her in front of the Lindsays’ house on her way to visit a friend in the neighboring town. Feeling a little uncomfortable, Kate stepped quietly up the front walk to the door. She’d walked this path countless times in the past, but this felt different. She was wearing a dark gray dress with half-length sleeves and a round neck along with dark tights and gray Jimmy Choo ankle boots, which she’d once bought, in a fit of madness, for six hundred dollars. She definitely wasn’t a teenager anymore.

Almost immediately after she rang the doorbell Hugh’s dad, George, opened it and beamed at her. He hadn’t changed much. His hair was still full but had turned a little gray. Otherwise, he looked just as he had when she’d seen him last—thirteen years ago during her high school graduation ceremony. But this time, she noticed a similarity between Hugh and his father she’d never really noticed before.

“Kate! There you are!” George hugged her. “You look good, my girl.”

Before she could answer, he pulled her into the interior of the house. “Let me take a look at you. Good Lord, you’ve grown up.”

Smiling, she tilted her head. “Thanks for the compliment.”

“Hugh was right!” He smiled.

“About what?” She looked at him questioningly, but he didn’t answer and only grinned as he helped her out of her jacket.

She would have loved to ask him what Hugh had said about her, but suddenly she heard the voice of Hugh's mom calling through the house.

“George? Is she here?”

“Yes, Iris!” George Lindsay called back, pushing Kate into the cozy living room which had seemingly been refurnished some time ago.

Iris Lindsay came out of the kitchen, which was connected to the living room by a swinging door, and hurried to Kate. “Honey, there you are! I’m so glad you showed up!” She firmly hugged Kate, who was, for no particular reason, almost moved to tears.

“Thank you for the invitation,” Kate squeaked out.

Iris was slightly taller than Kate and much fuller. She radiated a deep contentedness and bustling energy. Her blond hair showed no traces of gray, and she still wore it down like a perfectly styled lion’s mane.

“Of course, dear,” Iris said, patting Kate on the hand. “We’re so pleased you came. Isn’t that right, George?”

“Absolutely,” her husband replied happily.

“And where’s Hugh?” Iris looked around helplessly.

“I asked him to have a look at the fountain pump in the garden; it needs to be done before it gets cold,” George replied.

“That could have waited,” Iris complained, shaking her head with a frustrated sigh. “Dinner’s almost ready.”

“Do you need any help?” Kate offered.

“No, sweetie.” Iris smiled at her. “You just go along and enjoy yourself. I've already gotten out the photo albums for later.”

“Oh dear,” her husband whispered, barely audible.

Kate held back a smile.

Shortly after, Hugh came through the back door, wiping his hands on a towel. Just like Kate, he knew how serious Saturday dinner was to a Texan; he’d put on some decent clothes.
